You, Me, and a Roly Poly ‘Bug'

 

The title to this article has got to be near or at the top of the ‘Strangest Titles Ever’ list. If there were such a list, that is. But stick with me because by the time you get to the end, it will make sense. I promise.

I want to start by asking how many of you had at least some level of fascination or interest in the roly poly bugs you encountered as a kid? I know I did. But it wasn’t until just the other day while working on a project that I learned something I consider to be quite fascinating. Not to mention a dandy object lesson for all of you.

Are you ready? The roly poly bug is not even a bug, aka, insect! That’s right. The roly poly is actually a crustacean. More than that, it’s the ONLY crustacean that can survive solely on land, unlike their cousins ‘named’ crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. These little land-loving crustaceans also breathe through gills, which is why they live best where it’s moist/wet, i.e., dark, damp places. They also have the ability (unlike bugs which are really bugs) to drink through their gills OR through little tubes that extend out their rear end.

There are a few other interesting facts about the roly poly, but I’ll leave those for you to discover on your own, because now I want to share with you why I chose to make the roly poly the object of today’s article.

There are times in everyone’s life when we are a roly poly. Times when what appears to be is not. Times when we seem to have it altogether but don’t. Times when we smile and act like life is good, but inside our hearts are aching like crazy. Times when we know in our minds that God is there, but our hearts feel like he has put us out with last week’s trash. Times when we withdraw or aren’t our ‘usual self’ and someone mistakes our pain for anger or arrogance. Times when we are the man in Mark 9:24 who says to Jesus, “I believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (NIV).

Maybe you are a roly poly right now.

Or maybe it’s someone in your family. A neighbor. A coworker. A friend. The person you sat next to…behind…in front of…or across from in church last week.

Who it is isn’t the point, though. The point is that we need to remember that what appears to be, always isn’t. Or as the saying goes, “Appearances can be deceiving’. So…

Pray for the people you care about. Pray God’s peace and comfort for whatever and whenever. Pray for yourself—to have discernment, compassion, and understanding. Pray that you…me…everyone will be blessed with someone they can be transparent with. Bare their soul to, so to speak. And that whoever that someone is, will be honorable and worthy of their trust. Pray that you can be that someone when called upon.

The roly poly isn’t what it appears to be. Or more accurately, what we assume it to be. I hope and pray that each of us will love one another in such a way that we will see more clearly and love more intentionally so that none of us ever again feel like a roly poly ‘bug’.

*WWII hands-on display and presentation based on “All My Love, George…Letters from a WWII Hero”. The presentation consists of brief reading from the book, an interactive time of Q&A, and time for participants to view and examine a variety of WWII memorabilia including George’s original letters and medals.

*Keepsake In The Making Classes, using the book, “Please Pass the Memories” as inspiration, the class consists of exploring and brainstorming fun, creative, and interesting ways we can use your family’s keepsakes, recipes, photos, stories, and even traditions (YIKES) to bring past, present, and future generations of your family together. Everyone needs and wants to have a sense of who and where they come from, and the Keepsake In The Making Class is the perfect way to do just that!

*Women’s ministry events/conferences/retreats. I offer several programs that are easily adaptable to fit your needs and timeframe. Workshops for each one are optional. If You Want a Cat, Make Sure it is of the Pet Kind

I am a big fan of Dr. Seuss—with the exception of “The Cat in the Hat” and “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back”. I do not like those books…at all. The fact that the cat comes marching into the house and takes over is creepy to me. And the fact that although Sally and her no-name brother just let it all kind of happen is disturbing. I mean, seriously, they need a fish to tell them to get rid of that no-good cat?

Call me crazy but I just don’t like it. I do, however, think there is a lesson parents can learn from it. The lesson is this…

Your children need YOU to teach them how to say no AND what to say no to.

How many of you remember the “Just Say No!” kids were taught in middle-school about saying no to drugs via the DARE program? I don't know whether or not it was a success. I guess that all depends on one's definition of success. What I do know, however, is that there isn’t a research report or any other form of evidence proving that the kids who sat through the weekly talks from the friendly police officer were less likely to use drugs, alcohol, or tobacco than anyone else.

I’m not surprised, and here’s why: while I understand that the main goal of the program was to instill healthy habits and a respect for the law and their bodies, it isn’t the school’s job to instill morals in our children. And choices like that are as much about morals as they are healthy habits and respect for the law. 

Schools are for academic education and mirroring good citizenship. Our children need to be able to trust their teachers to provide these things in full. I will also say that teachers need to set an example of strong integrity and moral character by way of their conduct toward students, parents, coworkers, and the administration. BUT setting an example of what these things look like is not the same as teaching students how and why these things matter. That’s YOUR job.

It is YOUR job to make sure your children know right from wrong and how to choose right over wrong. It is your job to teach your children what is and isn’t safe for them, who and what is dangerous, and how to steer clear of those things SO THAT when they go to school, play sports, get a job, go out on a date, participate in a contest, or whatever else they do, they will know how and why to conduct themselves. 

As parents you cannot assume your kids will pick up on these things. I once overheard a parent say, "I can't teach my kid anything. She is lightyears ahead of where I was at her age." This mom was talking about her seven-year-old daughter's ability to maneuver and manipulate her way through apps, programs, games, and websites. But she was wrong! There is a LOT she can and must teach her daughter. Just because kids are tech-savvy when it comes to operating a phone, tablet, or computer, doesn’t mean they have life figured out. They may be at 'expert' level on a game, but knowing how to be their best self and give others the grace and respect to do the same is not a game. Neither should you leave teaching them these things to anyone other than yourselves--with help from grandparents and your church, of course. In other words, IT’S YOUR JOB TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN AREN’T DEPENDING ON A FISH (or friend, a television show, a book, a website, a video game, or the classroom) FOR GUIDANCE, PROTECTION, AND LOVE.

Hello! It's been a while...a long while since I've posted anything on this site, but that is about to change. Again. A few years ago, I transitioned everything over to my website. But as of the end of May, I will be shutting down my website. There are a number of reasons for this decision--one of which is AI. I know you've heard a lot about AI lately. The artificial intelligence kind. AI is wreaking havoc in the ghostwriting and freelance writing industry. Clients either want us to create their projects using AI (in part or in whole) or they do it themselves. AI is someone else's work, though, and I cannot in good conscience take from someone. And I certainly don't want them to take from me. SO.... The other reasons either directly or indirectly stem from this, as well, making it impractical and unnecessary to maintain it. 

BUT...

That doesn't mean I don't want to share with you, hear from you, and keep you up to date on where I'll be, what I'm writing, and to connect with you by way of booking an event/presentation with your students, club/organization, women's ministry, book club, or civic group.
